Individualizing pedagogy in LanguageNation Recommendations for tailoring training to learner profiles

he LanguageNation platform aims to make online language learning more effective and efficient by leveraging the resources of Human Language Technology and Second Language Acquisition research. Part of this goal involves tailoring training to learner profiles at the individual level, which may be accomplished more easily in an online environment than in traditional classroom instruction. Further, when training autonomously, learners may not choose the appropriate lessons or modules, relying instead on what they think they might like or need; tailoring can provide the necessary guidance. Tare et al. (2013) outline how to gather information about and build a learner profile which speaks to learner needs, proficiency, and aptitude. This companion report proposes how to use that information to tailor the training more specifically, using examples and illustrations from the LanguageNation platform pilot to discuss current and future possibilities.
